FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
One would imagine that as this page evolves, this section will grow. The below is my list of frequently asked questions so far. If you have a question that is not addressed here, please contact me and I'll be happy to answer it for you.
What is a caricature? A caricature is an artist's interpretation of someones features, usually their face. It is not a portrait. Typically a caricature will focus on one or two distinct elements of someone's face and exaggerate them to make the drawing comical, cartoonish and recognizable. Though some caricature artists strive for extreme exaggeration, I prefer a more tame approach. I strive to make my caricature both comical and non offensive.
What is a "ten buck toon"? It is a print ready high resolution digital image suitable for use on the internet ( profile pics, avatars, etc. ) and almost any type of personal reproduction. Oh yeah, and it costs just ten bucks. We have several options available. The ten buck toon is just the starting point.
Why/How so cheap? I send out print ready high resolution digital files. That means I don't have to package it and drive down to the post office to mail it. That which saves time saves money. I simply pass that savings on to you.
How do you draw them? 2 ways actually. 1.Good old fashioned pencil, paper, pens, markers and brushes. 2. Using digital drawing tools. The production method depends on the subject and how I feel is the best way to do it. Either way, once it's drawn, it's retouched and sent strait to your e-mail.
Will you mail the paper drawing to me? I've been down that road before and found that it's not really worth it. Way too much extra time for such a little amount of money. If your looking for the original, please drop me a line ahead of ordering and let me know. I'll try to accomodate you.
What kind of pictures should I send? This is the most important question on here. It also has one of the longest answers. Click here to find out.
Will you draw me as whatever I want? Yes. No. Sort of. I can't legally draw you as an intilectual property of someone else. I can make you look "similar" to a certain superhero, but not exactly like it. It's just not worth the risk for ten bucks. On the order page, there is a sample of a caricature that is similar, but not exactly the same thing as a superhero. This goes the same for sports teams although, it is much easier to fake by having just the name of the city on the jersey. I'll do my best to accomdate you whatever you want to be drawn as. If you have any questions just let me know.
Will you draw me with someone else? Yes, you can order as many caricatures as you want but each is a seperate order even if it's drawn on the same page. If you have a very large number, please e-mail me with what you want and I'll send you a price.
Can you work from professional photos? I can, but I will not without the photographer's written permission. He or she makes their living off of both taking pictures and selling prints of them. Any money made where another artist's work is copied may be considered a breach of derivative works laws. Caricatures may be a legal grey area but it's a grey area that I'm not willing to venture into. Casual snapshots will make a better caricature anyway.
Will you draw me naked? I'm totally not that dude from Titanic so the answer is no. Unless you look like Kate Whinslet in which case the answer is still no... but feel free to send pictures. ( That's a joke people. Please don't. ) Caricatures can be made sexy without full frontal nudity. Just keep in mind that a fun caricature is almost always better than a sexy one.
How long will it take to get my caricature? This depends on how many people are ahead of you in line. Though most images are delivered within 48 hours some drawings can take up to 2 weeks.
What can I use my caricature for? The most common use of a caricature is to simply display it in your home or place of business. It can also be used for personal uses such as a chat room avatar or personal stationary. When you purchase a caricature you are not purchasing printing rights to it. You can use it for any non commercial use. For more info on what you can legally do with your caricature click here. For what it's worth, in most cases I will allow you commercial use of it as well for a small fee. But you are legally obligated to request it. I have not said no to anyone who has asked me yet. I just want to know about it. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that you like it that much. I need to see the information on how you want to use it to determine the fee.
Will my drawing be posted on this website? Maybe. I own the copyright to anything that I draw and can legally post them. However, I do not own your photos. To be honest, a caricature without a photo next to it is a useless sample. If you see your drawing in my samples and would like it removed, simply ask.
What does "high resolution" mean? The face on most drawings is between 6" and 8" tall. When scanned at 300dpi, they can be clearly reporoduced at a minimum of 24" tall. What that means for most people is that you can make it as big as you want it. For those of you who want to fill a wall with your face, call a mural artist.
What if I don't like my caricature? This is one of those situations where one or two bad apples have spoiled it for the whole bunch. I sell caricatures very cheaply to begin with. I don't have time to be taken advantage of just because you want more bang for your buck. Before ordering, please understand the following: A caricature is an artist's comical rendition of someones likeness. It is not a portrait. When you commission a drawing, it is done especially for you. I can't put it back on a shelf and sell it again so I can't offer you a refund. If you'd like it redone, I'm happy to draw you another. Not for free mind you, they are already very close to free as it is.
What if I want to commission something that is not listed on your website? Just e-mail me the specific details and I will give you an estimate. keep in mind that you must have a concept before you request any information on it. I cannot put what you have on your mind onto paper if you cannot explain to me what it is that you want.
